 Non-profit Program: 2008

Des Moines Arts Festival and Co-Sponsor Prairie Meadows invite Polk County-based non-profit organizations to participate in the 2008 Des Moines Arts Festival.

Applications to participate in the 2009 Des Moines Arts Festival on June 26-28 will be available online in February.

The following organizations participated in the 2008 Prairie Meadows Non-Profit Program at the Des Moines Arts Festival:

Animal Rescue League of Iowa

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa's mission is to promote animal welfare, to encourage and strengthen the human/animal bond and to prevent the overpopulation of pets. Arts Activity: Make cat, rabbit and dog masks, construct a rainbow fish or fish nametag, and learn to draw a dog’s face.


Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa’s mission is to provide one to one mentors for at-risk children. Arts Activity: String together friendship bracelets.


Blank Park Zoo

The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education and recreation. The Zoo manages 49 acres of land and cares for over 1,500 animal specimens. Arts Activity: It’s the Year of the Frog at Blank Park Zoo so stop here to create a frog pouch.


Brenton Skating Plaza

The Brenton Skating Plaza provides a fun recreational experience for families and individuals of all ages as part of the Principal Riverwalk. Arts Activity: Decorate colorful paper zambonis or ice skates with feathers, buttons and glitter.

Civic Center of Greater Des Moines

The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines is a private, not-for-profit corporation celebrating 28 years as the presenter of major Broadway and educational touring companies, performers and groups. All performances of the Broadway Series are supported by Willis Auto Campus.


Des Moines Parks and Recreation

The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines is a private, not-for-profit corporation celebrating 28 years as the presenter of major Broadway and educational touring companies, performers and groups. All performances of the Broadway Series are supported by Willis Auto Campus.

 

Des Moines Symphony Academy

The mission of the Des Moines Symphony Academy is to provide fun, enriching, comprehensive and interactive music education experiences for students, teachers, and other music lovers. Arts Activity: Create a musical egg shaker.

The DownTown Church

A church excited about Jesus and excited to serve the people of Des Moines. Arts Activity: Make paintings with sprayable paint.

 

Greater East Side Development

Greater East Side Development’s goal is to unite leaders of businesses, churches, schools and neighborhoods to make the east side of Des Moines the best it can be. Arts Activity: Plant a seed in a Greater Eastside Development decorated cup.

Hospice of Central Iowa works to provide quality of life at the end of life through compassionate care for all individuals and their families. Arts Activity: Create foam memory books and decorate with favorite memories.

 

I'll Make Me a World in Iowa is a diverse collaboration of Iowans, which highlights African-American arts, culture, and contributions through education, awareness, and preservation during an annual enrichment celebration and with continual educational outreach. Arts Activity: The black inventors exhibit will explore the work of such innovators as George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, Madame C.J. Walker, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams through arts activities.

Iowa Asian Alliance promotes the business, economic and community development of Iowa's Asian-American community and works to increase community awareness of their cultural and economic contributions.

The mission of the Iowa Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau is to identify traffic safety problems and develop and implement with local and state agencies traffic safety programs designed to reduce death and injury on Iowa's streets and highways. Arts Activity: Write traffic safety messages or slogans on a giant fabric safety belt.

Iowa Homeless Youth Centers

The Iowa Homeless Youth Centers work to eliminate homelessness among children, youth, and young mothers in Polk County. Arts Activity: Create a miniature Reggie’s Sleepout box.


Established by the Fair Board to conduct a major capital campaign for the renovation and preservation of the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds, the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation has raised over $60 million. Arts Activity: Color giant spin art to be displayed at the Iowa State Fair’s Kickoff celebration.

Living History Farms tells the changes in Iowa life and agriculture from 1700 to present day. Arts Activity: Make a farm animal pin/button.

 

Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa grants the wishes of children with life threatening medical conditions. Arts Activity: Weave paper to create spiral Christmas trees to celebrate Jolly Holiday Lights.


Mentor Iowa is a non-profit, volunteer organization whose mission is to provide assistance to abused, neglected, and delinquent children who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court Services. Arts Activity: Have some fun with the sun by decorating suncatcher head bands. Each head bobber (headband with suncathcers attached) has two summer themed sun catchers per headband.  Participants can pick out a head bobber, design them how they want and wear them.

 

Metro Arts Alliance 
Metro Arts enriches the quality of life in the metro area by connecting people to the arts through programming, communication and support of artists and arts organizations with the goal of making the arts everywhere and accessible to everyone. Arts Activity: Make tissue paper flowers.

 

Polk County Conservation’s mission is to provide the citizens of Polk County with quality outdoor recreation, conservation education, and long-term protection of Polk County's natural heritage. Arts Activity: Make a bird bracelet using pipe cleaners and beads to represent different color patterns of birds.

Salisbury House is a historic manor house and museum with the goal of providing historical and cultural programming events and resources to the Greater Des Moines Community and beyond. Arts Activity: Assemble a puzzle featuring images of Terrace Hill and Salisbury House, or color a paper fan.

 

The Science Center of Iowa strives to inspire an A-ha moment that triggers people of all ages to re-think the way they view science. Arts Activity: Create astrophotography by drawing out of this world art work inspired by JR Paulson.

Special Olympics Iowa
Special Olympics Iowa provides year-round quality athletic training and competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Arts Activity: Decorate a colorful award ribbon to wear.

Terrace Hill Foundation
The Terrace Hill Foundation's mission is to provide resources that support the restoration, maintenance and development of Terrace Hill as a premier National Historic Landmark and as an educational center for current and future generations. Arts Activity: Assemble a puzzle featuring images of Terrace Hill and Salisbury House, or color a paper fan.

Women's Development Connection

The Women’s Development Connection’s mission is to bring professionals together, exchange ideas, educate on economic issues, provide information relative to vocational opportunities, and bring to the city the best thinkers and speakers on economic issues.
